Paul Quarrington remembered in essays, videos and more

On Tuesday night, the Post's Mark Medley attended a tribute for Canadian novelist, musician and screenwriter Paul Quarrington.
In the months before his death, author Paul Quarrington spoke to the National Post about his fight with cancer. The essays, videos and photos are below:
Part one: Each day like it's my last

I've often wondered why, in popular song and fiction, people dealing
with The Diagnosis often choose to go mountain climbing. For example,
in Tim McGraw's popular song Live Like You Were Dying, the man who has
received The Diagnosis lists as his recent activities, "I went sky
diving, I went Rocky Mountain climbing, I went two point seven seconds
on a bull named Fu Manchu." The Diagnosis we're discussing is, of
course, the one wherein the doctor begins to speak, in a very
good-natured manner, ("Well, the test results have given us some
answers ...") and then goes on to say a lot of stuff that doesn't
really make any sense ("The tumor is what we call squamous or sessile
..."), and somewhere in there announces that you are going to die. Way
way sooner than you thought.

Part two: On mountains and my mortality

When last you heard from this correspondent, I was waxing poetical
about mountains; specifically, the Torngats in Northern Labrador, which
are amongst the oldest on the planet. I suggested that people who have
received a very dire Diagnosis often think about mountains. Those with
vestiges of health and energy sometimes even clamber up the blighters,
perhaps because (to paraphrase and expand upon something said by George
Mallory) the mountains are there, and very shortly the climbers will no
longer be so. Mountains make good launching pads-for rumination about
mortality, speculation about the afterlife, vaulting into the unknown.

"Sleep on your writing; take a walk over it; scrutinize it of a morning; review it of an afternoon; digest it after a meal; let it sleep in your drawer a twelvemonth; never venture a whisper about it to your friend, if he be an author especially. You may read selections to sensible women, -- if young the better."
A. Bronson Alcott

It’s about 300 degrees, but the crowds are light and the food delicious (if expensive). We spent three hours there Monday, all day yesterday (except for a side trek to Magic Kingdom to ride Space Mountain, which was CLOSED for renovations, ugh…so we went to the Hall of Presidents, then headed back to Epcot) and after hitting Animal Kingdom for a few shows and–Xanax willing–one trip on Expedition Everest, we’ll be home this afternoon.

  • Ulysses is regarded as as a single of the most essential works of modernist literature, it chronicles the travails of the primary protagonists, Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dadelaus on an ordinary day in Dublin on 16 June 1904. It's stream of consciousness method, crafty structuring, experimental prose, diverse vocabulary, rich characters and satirical qualities have produced the work one of the most nicely regarded books ever written. It is divided into eighteen chapters or episodes, eac...
  • This isn't a story that zings plot. It's a story that rather sneaks up on a reader, a collection of observations. The situation is rather unextraordinary. New parents go to a party across the street. There, we meet some interesting people, including a man who is AWOL.I have a story also about AWOL soldiers and patriotic holiday weekends, something based on a real life incident in my early twenties. It's one of my favorites, but now that I've read Ennis's version of such a tale, my own slow-burn of a story seems ridiculously long and unexceptional (its forty-plus-page length is likely one...
