Michael Lista: On Andrew Hood

Michael Lista is guest editing The Afterword this week. Lista's first book of poetry, Bloom, was recently published by House of Anansi Press.
The book re-imagines the events of May 21, 1946, when a Canadian
scientist named Louis Slotin was injured -- and later died -- during a
mishap while working on the Manhattan Project. In the summer of 2001 -- I was almost 18 -- I went on exchange to England to do a high school English credit. When I was there I met an amazing young writer, Andrew Hood, a red-headed kid from Guelph who even then was producing stories of unusual power and poise. He listened to good music. He didn’t wear tight-fitting sleeveless t-shirts like me. I felt embarrassed showing him my poems, which sounded like something a convalescent Tennyson might sleep-shout after having suffered some sort of neurological insult. We lost touch. A couple of years later I had finished university and was living in Montreal. One day I spotted someone who looked like Andrew -- he’d lost a bunch of weight, his hair had changed -- and so I creepily followed the guy the whole way down Parc Avenue, from the Mile End all the way down town, to The Word Bookstore, where I tried to act casual and serendipitous. I introduced myself. It was Andrew. How weird meeting you here…Andrew went on to publish Pardon Our Monsters, a collection of short stories that won the $10,000 Danuta Gleed Award in 2007. It’s a beautiful book; you haven’t read a collection of stories like it. Last week I gave Andrew a call at his home in Guelph, and we talked about his work, the state of literary publishing in Canada, the writers he loves, and the city he almost does, Guelph. Give it a listen here.

"To be able to write a play a man must be sensitive, imaginative, naive, gullible, passionate; he must be something of an imbecile, something of a poet, something of a liar, something of a damn fool."
Robert E. Sherwood

Bathish’s work has been widely published across the Arab and Israeli-Palestinian worlds. He has published seven books up to date, the most recognized of which is titled A Room in Tel-Aviv published in 2007 by the Arab institute for Studies and Research, in Beirut. His short ...
  • Murakami Bootlegs No More Haruki Murakami's major works have long been available in the United States, but the author has refused too allow distribution of his first two novels, Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973, both of which are narrative precursors to A Wild Sheep Chase, well-known to readers in English. According to CNN Go,translations for the first two were released by the Japanese publisher Kodansha as English study aids. They went out of print in the late '90s, and ...
  • In the 13th in a series of posts on 2012 short story collections entered for The Story Prize, Jen McConnell, author of Welcome, Anybody (Press 53), discusses ideas that trigger stories, the rare ones that have come easily, and those she more typically struggles with. How often does an idea for a story occur to you, and what triggers those ideas? Ideas come to me all the time. Too often sometimes. Once in a while they lead somewhere, end up somehow in a story. Most often though, I think, “Oh that would make a good story,” only to realize that there isn’t anything beyond that first...
  • Abdellah Taïa is Morocco’s highest profile gay writer, a point underscored in the accompanying blurb to his recently translated An Arab Melancholia. Since the book is billed as an autobiographical novel, one might expect—wrongly, it turns out—a gut-wrenching exposition of the existential dilemma of growing up gay in Morocco. Taïa came into his own awareness in Islamic Morocco, where being openly gay is taboo, which of course complicates an already complex and formative…...
