Live the Freelance Life: 9 Tips for Becoming a Writer

Did you know that half of all people freelance at least part-time?
Freelancing is a lot of fun, but it’s also a lot of hard work. You’ll need to learn how to manage your time, resources, and money.
Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, these nine tips to becoming a writer will clear things up.
1. Write Everyday
It’s impossible to improve your writing without actually writing.
Think of it like playing an instrument. You wouldn’t expect to get a chair with the London Philharmonic after picking up the flute for the first time. Writing is no different.
Write every single day — even if you don’t feel like it.
2. Make Time for Reading
Stephen King famously said that the two steps to becoming a writer are to read a lot and write a
lot.
Reading enhances your vocabulary, provides inspiration, and stimulates the mind. Make an effort to get at least an hour of reading in each day.
3. Set Goals
Freelancing is largely a self-directed profession. If you don’t have the discipline to set and smash goals, you’ll have a hard time finding success.
Challenge yourself to set small, achievable goals like writing 1,000 words per day or outlining a certain number of chapters. These may seem like small objectives, but over time they’ll add up.
4. Treat Writing Like an Office Job
Since your success or failure as a freelancer is in your own hands, you’ll need to take your new career path seriously.
Create a comfortable working space and set a schedule for yourself.
Though taking a regimented approach might seem antithetical to freelancing, routines have a positive effect on productivity. Once you’re in the habit of something, it becomes easier to do.

5. Build a Portfolio
Most companies and publications will request writing samples along with your pitch or application. The easiest way to keep all of your samples organized is to digitize them and upload them.
Create a small portfolio site for yourself. It’s easier than you might think and a well-designed portfolio makes a great first impression.
6. Learn to Value Feedback
Criticism is to writers what kryptonite is to Superman.
No one likes hearing that they’re wrong. But that’s not the point of good feedback.
Keep an open mind when it comes to critique and find a few people who aren’t afraid to tell you what’s good…and what might need another draft.
7. Keep up with Expenses
Freelancing might seem like it’s all about coffee shops, sleeping in late, and living your best life, but if you’re not careful, that dream can be a nightmare. Especially when it comes to taxes.

Make a note of all business expenses you incur.
That includes work materials like your laptop and Internet access, travel expenses, and more. And to make keeping track of your payments easier, create a paystub alongside each invoice.
Keep up with these! You’ll thank us when it’s tax time.
8. Practice the Perfect Pitch
Pitching is tough. It’s also an art form.
Keep it quick, to the point, and specific. The more attention-grabbing and well-formatted, the better.
9. Never Give Up
The downside to pitching is that you’ll get a lot of rejection letters. Don’t let that get you down.
Keep your head up and persevere, even when it becomes difficult.

  • Often, the most important part of your story will be your characters. Sometimes, you decide to base one or more of your characters on someone you know. This can be a great way to start. You already know most of the things about them, anyway - how they act, how they speak, what they would or wouldn't do. But unless you're writing non-fiction, you will probably have to come up with some of the characters on your own.
  • The analysis paper is an assignment dreaded by many students. In fact, it can be a creative and fun process! You will be critiquing another's work and making determinations about that work from a specific perspective: you will put forth a thesis about the work based on your observations.

  • Writing online is easy as writing your name. All you need is to know what to write about and where to make money with your articles. I learned that very thing and am going to tell you how to do it. Do not join just any site that claims to pay their writers without reading this first.
  • Amanda Ross, a creator of the Richard and Judy book club, offers some (pretty damn obvious) strategies for finding something new to read that you might not have chosen otherwise. No offence, Amanda, but I’m really not interested in finding things I wouldn’t have chosen otherwise. It’s Twilight and Dragonlance for me, and that’s it. A stranger’s opinion Independent bookshops are very much governed by the taste of the ower. It’s very, very brave of people to run bookshops, because of competition from chains and supermarkets. Fast fact about writing

It has been said that a monkey, randomly typing away on a typewriter (in the days when typewriters replaced the pen or plume as the preferred instrument of writing) could re-create Shakespeare-- but only if it lived long enough (this is known as the infinite monkey theorem).
