Roundup: NBCC winners, Clarice Lispector, Michael Martone, more

Last Thursday’s National Book Critics Circle awards attracted plenty of coverage, including reports from the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and other outlets. At Commentary’s website, D.G. Myers weighs in on the fiction winner, Edith Pearlman’s story collection Binocular Vision; her story “Settlers,” which the magazine published in 1986, is now available on the magazine’s website. You can check out photos from the awards reception on our Facebook page.

Benjamin Moser, who translated New Directions’ new edition of Clarice Lispector’s novel The Hour of the Star, participates in a roundtable on Lispector’s work at the Quarterly Conversation. Colm Toibin delivers an appreciation of the novel at the site as well.

John Domini reviews Michael Martone’s new story collection, Four for a Quarter, also at the Quarterly Conversation.

Carmela Ciuraru reviews Lauren Groff’s novel Arcadia for Newsday.

Evan Hughes discusses the real-life tale of infidelity and academia that inspired Saul Bellow’s Herzog at the Awl.

Rayyan Al-Shawaf reviews Shalom Auslander’s novel Hope: A Tragedy for Truthdig.

Jan Alexander reviews Linda Urbach’s novel Madame Bovary’s Daughter for the New World Review.

Joseph Peschel reviews Megan Mayhew Bergman’s debut story collection, Birds of Lesser Paradise, for the Boston Globe.

  • There is a school of thought that says you can’t write anything unless the stars are aligned and your muse is inspired. I don’t subscribe to it. I say there is inspiration / motivation to be found in adversity, too. At the end of August, I took my husband to the ER. He stayed in [...]
  • This morning we found the first morels of the season, which caused me, much to the dismay of my sweetheart, to start singing “The First Morel” (think “The First Noel”). But morels! We found eleven beautiful morels, most of...
  • Predicting the Next Catastrophe If you don’t want to be reminded that mankind’s tenure on  Planet Earth is extremely shaky and courtesy only of a combination of cosmic fluke, sheer bloody-mindedness and lack of a ‘Plan B’ – then this is not the book for you. Our personable tour guide is Dr Florin Diacu , who is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Victoria, British Columbia and in Megadisasters he applies his mathematician’s brain to the subject of the catastrophes than the human race is heir to – earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, wandering asteroids, pandemics, climate change and...
  • Have you noticed hundreds of advertisements on the internet announcing, "We'll help you create your e-book." You've thought about contacting the source of the ad, but you weren't sure if you can afford it.
  • As writers, we all know how hard it is to read a book without dissecting, critiquing or copy editing in your head. As a publicist (and a lapsed writer), I can’t help giving the same scrutiny to every email and newsletter blast that lands in my inbox. Sad, perhaps, but true. That’s because, whether you realize it or not, certain emails are actually important marketing pieces that have writing requirements of their own — just the way fiction does.  Those announcing your book’s publication, those telling the world about your launch party or a reading you’re giving.  Emails you send to...
