Annie Jennings PR Publicity Presents Self Promotion Is Key To Gaining Author Publicity

Many authors are private and shy people who have no idea what may be to come, once they are published. Most literary agents agree that author publicity is as important to a book’s popularity as is the manuscript. So for you a fledgling author, you must be prepared to join in the world of self promotion.
While self-publishing has allowed a whole new level of authorship for those intending on a writing career and generating the income to continue it, it is probably necessary to follow the more traditional means of finding an agent or publicist to assist you on your journey. Finding the right person to work with is highly important as you will need to feel as comfortable with them as they should with you. This may be a long-term relationship and you will need to be honest in your goals and expectations. Your agent should be honest in telling you that promotion begins with you and will mostly be on your shoulders.
Trying to sell to a publisher and publicize a book without a publicist or agent usually does not work, unless you are only looking at a small scale project in self-publishing. Many publishers will not even look at uninvited work submitted from someone who has never been published. An agent can help get a foot in the door.
However, in order to obtain the agent, you may need more than a good manuscript. The agent may ask you how you intend to sell the book. The agent wants to know that you are serious and secure in your plans to market your book and the publisher may ask this, as well.
You will need to know who your intended audience is – is your subject matter of limited interest to say sports’ fans, or homemakers? Are men or women more likely to purchase your book, and does it have potential limited to a particular age group? These are all important factors to take into consideration.
A best-selling author, must get out and promote a new publication, himself. He cannot leave it up to someone else. This is even more true with a new writer. An agent or publicist will obviously assist with ideas and preparation, but the people want to meet or hear from the author. An easy and inexpensive way to start promotion is through a social networking site. Your friends and family will be interested in what you are writing and they will tell others, who will also visit your site and so on. While you don’t want to include too many details of your manuscript itself, you certainly can share the basics about a character or subject matter. Be sure to protect your privacy though, as you work toward becoming a celebrity, you don’t want strangers to be able to access too much of your personal information.
Whether you live in a small town or a large city, you certainly have friends and acquaintances in local stores and restaurants. Share with them that you are writing a book, or are about to have one published. They will most likely be interested and may invite you to have a book signing, before you even ask. Tell the local librarian. She may want you to give a talk, even prior to the book’s publication. Local newspapers love local human interest stories and finding out there is an author in their own backyard is sure to generate a story or two.
You can move on from there to radio and television. Check for talk-format stations in your area. Often they have live shows that may have a perfect spot for an interview with a new author. Even music stations sometimes have morning or afternoon news hours or a morning show with celebrity interviews. And, like the local newspaper, local television stations probably will want to join the bandwagon as well.
It is ultimately up to you as the author to promote your own product. Sure, agents and publicists help, that’s what they are paid to do, but only you can secure your own future. Once you have attracted the local media, you should continue to move forward. You cannot only leave it up to them. Don’t hesitate to ask your local media outlet to share your interview or news spot with a higher level. Clip local newspaper articles and send them to larger audience publications. Work closely with your agent for direction on enlarging the plan. And, be ready to hit the road.
